Nepal: Swearing in of new Prime Minister and action against former leadership – a sign of political change

Balendra Shah took oath as the Prime Minister of Nepal on Saturday. Hours after the swearing-in, KP Sharma Oli and Ramesh Lekhak were detained by the police.

According to officials, this action has been taken in a case related to the protests in 2025. Both the leaders were arrested from their residence. Police said that the arrest was made on the basis of the recommendations of the investigation commission.

A large number of youth participated in these 2025 demonstrations. The demonstrations started over unemployment, economic situation and political issues. Protests turned violent at many places, following which force was used by security forces.

According to reports, several people died and many others were injured in the clashes. An inquiry commission was then set up, which in its report noted mishandling of the situation and excessive use of force in some cases.

The report also said that responsibility for decision making goes to higher levels. On this basis, legal action was recommended.

The new government has said this action is in accordance with the law. Officials say that the investigation and further process of the case will be decided in the court.

At the same time, some political parties have raised questions on the arrest and demanded a fair investigation. This development is being seen as an important political and legal development in Nepal.
